The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition re-awakened my love of this classic and I'm wondering if there are any modern adventure games of the same style that anyone could reccomend.
I'd also recommend Machinarium [1] - a beautiful, quirky game in a stylized robotic world. Awesome atmosphere.
[1] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MachinariumI'd suggest Runaway [1]: a really nice adventure! The chapter 3 is now out...but I didn't managed to play it yet: the first and the second were very good, though.
[1] http://www.runaway-thegame.com/The second Monkey Island: Special edition [1] is out now on Steam, if you liked the first remastered version.
[1] http://store.steampowered.com/app/32460/There's really nothing like The Longest Journey [1] and its follow-up, Dreamfall: The Longest Journey. Highly recommended. Amazing story and settings.
[1] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Longest_JourneyI'm not sure when your love for adventure games took a break, but if you haven't checked out Syberia (2002) and Syberia II (2004) you should! Syberia III is said to be forthcoming to PC + PS3.

+1 for both Mechanarium [1] and The Longest Journey [2] - these are both extraordinarily good adventure games (though Mechanarium does have a few mildly annoying sliding-tile puzzles). They can both be bought through Steam for not too much.
I would also suggest Ben There, Dan That [3] as a free, extremely funny, relatively short Lucasart-style game.
[1] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MachinariumThere's the latest instalments of Sam & Max you can get via Steam:
Sam & Max Seasons One and Two [1]
Season three is currently being released an episode at a time. The first three episodes are out now:
Sam & Max: The Devil’s Playhouse [2]
[1] http://store.steampowered.com/sub/766/There are a lot of amateur games going on at the site of Adventure Game Studio [1]. This software lets you create your own adventure games, and has like a decade going on. You might find some crappy games, of course, but there has been released a lot of good games: Look at the games made by AGD Interactive [2] (mostly beautiful remakes of Sierra games), and Wadget Eye Games [3], run by Dave Gilbert, who has release The Shivah and The Blackwell Convergence, a couple of games that follow closely the conventions of point n' click adventure games.
Also, among the answers it has been mentioned TellTale Games. I have the complete 3 seasons of Sam n' Max and I wholeheartedly recommend the to you.
[1] http://www.bigbluecup.comOn The Rainslick Precipice of Darkness [1] is a two-part point-and-click adventure, with a bit of turn-based RPG combat thrown in, in a similar style designed by the guys behind Penny Arcade a couple of years ago, available on Steam [2], or on their Greenhouse game distribution site [3]. I enjoyed them, but unfortunately the series was cancelled after two episodes due to disappointing sales.
Can also second the above recommendations for TellTale games, the first Sam and Max series was a bit weak and overly repetitive but they've got over that and series 2 and series 3 have been great and I've loved their Monkey Island series too.
[1] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penny_Arcade_Adventures%3a_On_the_Rain-Slick_Precipice_of_DarknessBeneath a Steel Sky, perhaps? Been looking at picking this up for my iPod. Don't know how well it functions on modern hardware and a recent OS release, but have heard really good things about the iPhone/iPod port.
I really enjoyed Cedric and the Revolution:

Great sense of humor, relatively short and easy (but still challenging).
[1] http://www.bigbluecup.com/games.php?action=detail&id=663I've found many games of that type (though short) on newgrounds and other flash game sites. There's also some indie games out there. Penumbra [1] is one off the top of my head.
