I really enjoy playing Role Playing Games co-op with friends, but I find that too many games offer only "versus" multiplayer modes. Also, having local network gaming is important because I don't have a fast Internet connection.

The problem is that RPGs allowing the story mode to be played with friends together are so few and far between, which is puzzling because almost all of the games offering this are great fun.

I've played and been addicted to Diablo 2, Borderlands, and a little Titan Quest, but are there any other enjoyable RPGs available that I'm missing?

Check out Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2. I never played 2 multiplayer, but my friends and I had a lot of fun playing NWN1 together.

Dungeon Siege 1 and 2 are pretty good, I played them a lot with mates over LAN. Very Diablo-esque.

You may also want to look into the Sacred games. They are VERY Diablo-y. If you enjoy playing Diablo and Titan Quest with your friends, they are an obvious choice.

Some MMORPG are more oriented to PvE than PvP. If you have some friends to play with I think you can enjoy the RPG part of them.

Here two that I know, but probably there are many more.

  • Lord Of The Rings Online (LOTRO) has many quests that can be played in small group. At the moment it need a month fee, but it is already announced to be Free 2 Play in autumn 2010.
  • Dungeon & Dragons Online

D&D Online already is FTP. Money to level up though. :-) - C. Ross
(1) Not anymore, leveling tokens were taken out along time ago. All that's really stopping players now is the amount of free content at the higher levels. But frankly, if you've comitted that much time, 5-10 bucks to support the game shouldnt' be too much of a hassle - Alex Larzelere

Farm Hands [1] is a tiny GameMaker game for up to 4 that's fun to play over Hamachi [2] (virtual lan simulator).

Got a bunch of friends together over voice-chat and hamachi and had a blast figuring out how to play and the different things to do, lots of teamwork. (Game doesn't come with instructions - a cool thing actually!)

Less and less game are using LAN multiplayer mode. This is not the place to discuss why but I think it's mainly because of Internet mutliplayer mode which can bring much more to the game, but as stated by other this doesn't lock you off multiplayer games with you're friend, it's just less party mode than a LAN.

I'm telling this beacuase most recent game will allow you to only play online.

For me the best Diablo-like with co-op mode will be Diablo 3 which is not yet released sadly :( Because nothing can't be Diablo except another Diablo.


My understanding is that Diablo 3 is not using LAN either, which at first made me consider not buying it at all, but I've decided that it will probably be worth dealing with online-only play. Mostly I don't want an MMO, just a coop rpg. - Caleb Thompson
