Its been said before of system administrators that "...if you do your job right, no one will notice..."

System Administrator Appreciation Day is the last Friday of July. This year July 31, 2009 will be the 10th annual.

Has anyone out there actually celebrated this day? Even better, do you know any non-geek/sa types who even know about this day?

What System Administrator Appreciation Day stories (if any) do you have to share?

July 31st, 2009 -- Happy Sysadmin Day everyone. Be sure to share your stories!

July 30th, 2010 -- Happy Sysadmin Day! How are you celebrating this year?

July 29th, 2011 -- Happy Sysadmin Day again!

Apparently someone has celebrated this before:

sysadmin day cake

(1) I have to admit. That's pretty impressive! Did you actually participate in that or just find a photo on the internet? - KPWINC
Wow, nice cake.Who ate the RAM? - JS.
@JS, This guy - faultyserver
No, I had nothing to do with that cake... as much as I'd like to claim it. I actually found it on the net a while ago and sent it to our group on sysadmin day last year. I can't find an original link though, so I can't give proper credit, sorry. - Andy May
My god, a lot of work went into making the CPU! Of course, the easy way out would be to put a real CPU on the cake. Faster, and an interesting way to reuse a dead CPU. ;) - Ernie
@Ernie Would you really eat a cake that had an old dusty motherboard on it? :) - Andy May

I've always put System Administrator Appreciation Day in the same category as Talk Like a Pirate Day - it's a fun excuse to get together over a few beers, but Hallmark is never going to sell a card for it.

Its not always a Happy Sysadmin day ;-)

Being a sysadmin somewhere is like being a free car mechanic without others to represent your work for you.

Everyone needs one, and no one cares what the problem was or what you went through to fix it. Once it's fixed they don't want to see you again.

They also now have you as an excuse for the next thing that went wrong.

One year passed. Happy sysadminday, colleagues! I wish you long uptime, smart, but not too smart users and budget for all your long wanted IT improvements!

Happy SysAdmin Day, Sergey! - Matt Simmons

Employers should hand out, "No I will not fix your computer!" shirts on this holy day :) However I suspect that might not go down well with management!

If my company did anything for sysadmin's day they would plan something very time consuming then expect me to implement it on top of all the other stuff I end up working unpaid overtime to get finished. And I'll be expected to be grateful because the effort is for my benefit. So please don't give them any ideas...

How did I miss this thread?

I've been working on putting together a meetup for sysadmins in the greater New York City area on System Administrator Appreciation Day (July 31st this year).

Information can be found here:

This year for sysadmin appreciation day we're doing a very hairy upgrade. All of us are running around with our very long interleaved task lists. There have been close to 100 task XXX completed emalis since midnight.

User advocates are running around like chickens going AAAAAAH is this done? is that done? we keep saying it would go faster if you stoppped calling/stopping by every 20 seconds. It is a GREAT day! OR something.

While I haven't, I have had certain help-desk techs I work with often wish me a happy one. Once upon a time, last year I think, a group of 'em even tromped up here with boxes of donuts. Unfortunately, most of my co-workers have this weird healthy-eating thing going on, so they didn't get eaten to the levels the presenters clearly expected. I had two to make up. Tragic.

We get Monday [1] off. :)

(okay, okay, it's not for Sysadmin Day, but who's going to pass up a 3 day weekend?)
