ArqadeWhat is the name of a really old worms-like game where two tanks have to shoot at each other?

I remember playing a worms-like game but can't seem to find it.

Two tanks (bases perhaps?) had to take turns shooting at each other. When you won a round you got money to buy new types of ammo. I recall it was a pretty extensive list. As far as I remember the tanks couldn't move.

(2) Could somebody please add an artillery tag? - Steven Jeuris
(1) I added the tag for you. - theorise
(2) @badp: I checked meta prior to requesting the tag, and I don't see why it wouldn't be valid. "Our current policy is that genre tags are only used if the question is about the genre.". This question obviously is about the genre. - Steven Jeuris
Relevant - badp
(1) Note that badp's conversation link is only a partial early analysis. It's not conclusive. - Grace Note
@GraceNote eh. It was all that had been said prior to my edit and at the time when the comment was made. - badp
@badp Hence why I felt the need to give a second comment so that people don't think either of us just concluded with that. - Grace Note

Maybe "Scorched Earth"?

I had loads of fun with that one!

It looks like it! :) It still looks awesome! Don't recall you could have multiple tanks. Are those different players, or multiple tanks per player? - Steven Jeuris
I'm not sure. I can't remember having multiple tanks yourself so I figure it's probably multiple players. - mmmattias
First one I thought of. Great game. As I recall, you could only have one tank per player, but when playing with my friends, we would often enter two players for each of us to get multiple tanks. - edsobo
Strangely enough it was the gradient like backdrops that finally confirmed it for me. :) I was looking for screenshots of the shopping screen, but couldn't find any. - Steven Jeuris
(2) FWIW, there's a 3D version now... scorched3d.co.uk - Phil
@Phil: That's also mentioned on the site I linked to. Making it 3D makes it feel like a different genre altogether. I'm also still waiting for Team17 to create a proper 2D worms game again. - Steven Jeuris
You can also get versions of Scorched Earth for the iPad and iPhone, I think. - jprete
My first thought too. My friends and I had so many hours of fun with this game when we were younger - unfortunately, it's a pain to get working on modern PC's, because there is no frame-rate limit... - BlueRaja - Danny Pflughoeft
(5) Also just to note, the tanks can move in Scorched Earth, if you buy fuel. - BlueRaja - Danny Pflughoeft
(1) The version I played didn't allow multiple tanks/player. - Dan Neely
I'm surprised Scorched Earth is so much more popular than Tank Wars here. We played both a lot, back in the days, but we clearly preferred Tank Wars. It just always felt more polished, Scorched Earth has a certain roughness in its design. - Cort
Scorched Earth had humorous comments and totally insane weapons. What's not to like? On the other hand did I never try Tank Wars... - mmmattias

It could be any one of the old Artillery clones [1]

The one I played the most was Tank Wars:

Tank Wars

I think it's Pocket Tanks [1]

Nope, I recall the graphics were crappier, this is pretty 'modern'. 2001 it seems. - Steven Jeuris
@StevenJeuris well okay, this was just a guess :), I will try to find your game, when I get home from work - e-MEE
I'm guessing it is Scorched Earth as in mmmattias's answer. I'm looking for the 'shopping' screen and through the wikipedia list to confirm my thoughts. - Steven Jeuris
Wow. I didn't know that these tank games have so many clones. I thought Pocket Tanks was the only one there was. - Jonn
@Jonn well, you know, there has been a lot of videogames before 2001.. - kain
silly me. I thought pocket tanks was a game of the 90's and yeah. even then. hehe - Jonn
@Jonn yea...I always think that the 90's were 10 years ago lol - e-MEE
